A brief history of Shahjalal University Of Science And Technology

When Bangladesh gained its independence in 1971, there was a requirement for an increase in the number of higher education institutions in the country. However, due to various reasons, the government had to stick to only a few private universities. After a long struggle by both private and public sectors, one of the few public universities was established in 1986. Initially it started with only three departments: Physics, Chemistry and Economics; 13 teachers; and 205 students. Now, it has 7 schools, 27 departments serving more than 8600 students across 12 affiliated medical colleges. In addition to this, SUST introduced integrated honours courses for the first time in Bangladesh.

SUST has achieved so much success but it’s not just about numbers. The university has been ranked 2nd out of all public universities in the country by a research-based university ranking prepared by UGC, Higher Education Quality Enhancement Project (HEQEP). A number of innovations have been done with regard to curriculum development, faculty development, making use of IT and other resources for teaching purposes etc., which is why SUST has been considered as a role model by many other public universities.

What are the achievements of this university?

He was awarded the “Best ICT Innovator” title for his outstanding contribution in the area of ICT. The Vice Chancellor is an active member of many professional institutions and a renowned researcher in the field of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering. He has published more than one hundred research papers and several book chapters in reputed journals, conference proceedings and books. Professor Farid Uddin Ahmed is also a dedicated teacher and has been awarded with various teaching awards including the “Best Teacher Award” by Bangladesh Shishu Academy, “Best Teacher Award” by University Grants Commission and “Best Teacher Award” by the Ministry of Education.

Professor Farid Uddin Ahmed is also a renowned social worker. He has been actively involved with different social activities initiated by UNO, government and non-government organizations. He has been elected as a Fellow Member of Bangladesh Computer Council on 31st October, 2016.
