Gono Bishwabidyalay (GB) – a University with a difference – is one of the leading private universities in Bangladesh. Established to foster social development and human welfare, it aims to create new consciousness and commitment in the field of education.
The main objective of the GB University is to help female members of the society, students from low-income families, and children of martyrs and ethnic minorities through teaching and related activities. It was established in 1997 and is a leading private university in Bangladesh.

With a vision to create a new consciousness and commitment in the field of education, particularly to foster social development and human welfare, Gonoshathaya Kendra (G.K), an internationally known NGO founded Gono Bishawbidyalay (GB) a university with a difference. Established in 1999, GB has a campus of 25 acres in Sharsha, Dhaka which is one of the most crowded places in Bangladesh. But GB is committed to develop this area as well as to make it like any other place.
GB was established by 24 members of the working group who finally found its present shape as Gonoshathaya Kendra Trustee Board of 18 members. The board pilots all activities and makes policies to guide the future course of the University.
As it is evident in the name that, the word “Gono” means money. The word “Bishwabidyalay” means a school. So, Gono Bishwabidyalay is actually a school of money which aims to help the female members of the society and also to support the students from low income families who are studying in this school. Its founder Mr. Harunur Rashid established this school at Gonoshasthaya Road 01, Dhanmondi, Dhaka for such purposes.
What are the achievements of this university?
The Gono Bishwabidyalay (GB) is a community university. It was established as a part of the poverty alleviation efforts of the government, with a vision for the future of rural Bengal. The need to generate employment opportunities and improve living conditions in the rural areas is the two major reasons behind its establishment.
The main objective of GB is to provide higher education and research facilities to the people of the villages so that they can have equal access to this opportunity of development. GB has also become the top research University and developed several international links with many reputed universities /educational institutes in the world.
At the university, students take courses in Bengali, English, Computer Science, Environmental Science, the War of Liberation (Bengali: গুজরাত ব্যাক্তি সেন্ট), Gender Studies, Ethics and Equity. Students also have to work and conduct research in villages as part of their degree programs.
GB has developed a mechanism called Institutional Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) to improve the quality of its educational programs by getting evaluated by external peer review process. All of its programs have received ‘Good’ grades.
Who is the owner of this university?
The Gono Bishwabidyalay is an autonomous university, which has been established under the Gono Bishvabidyalay Act-2013. The University of Chittagong was established with the help of the Gonoshasthaya Kendra (GK) Charitable Trust. The history of GK is directly connected with the battlefield of Bangladesh’s liberation war in 1971. No other university in Bangladesh has anything similar to it.
The vision of the University is to continue to pursuit for excellence while remaining at the top as a research University in Bangladesh. It works tirelessly in order to fulfill the vision to make GBU one of the best universities in the world.

Accommodation
Gono University provides accommodation facilities to all its international students. It has separate hostels for boys and girls.
All the hostels are equipped with all the basic amenities such as TV, access to the internet, central heating and air-conditioning systems, water and gas supply. All hostel rooms are secured under the surveillance of cameras and security guards 24*7.
The hostel mess also provides hygienic & healthy Indian food, which is an added advantage for Indian students.

Library- Gono Bishwabidyalaya inherited 2 libraries (science and Arts faculty from Gonoshasthaya Kendra (GK). Gono Bishwabidyalaya of Bangladesh has a potentiality developed library having a considerable stock of original texts, books and references, journal, compact discs (CDs), etc. for each discipline.
